Notice of availability for public comment on proposed infrastructure improvements within a 500-year floodplain at Grand Canyon West (Airport), Peach Springs, Arizona.
The Hualapai Indian Tribe, as sponsor of Grand Canyon West Airport, intends to replace the Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS) at the Airport. The existing AWOS system equipment has failed, is outdated, and no longer supported by the manufacturer. The AWOS replacement will continue to provide the Airport with accurate and timely weather information for safe and efficient flight operations. The AWOS would encompass a footprint of approximately 10 feet in width and 40 feet in length. Additionally, the airport intends to conduct pavement maintenance on the airfield pavements. The maintenance would entail crack sealing, fog sealing and remarking of the existing airfield pavements. The improvements would have no anticipated impacts to the floodplain’s natural functions. The project area has been previously disturbed by the construction of the existing AWOS system, existing pavements, and maintenance activities. The functions of the existing floodplain would not be impacted as a result of the proposed project.
Due to the sponsor seeking Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) funding and approval of federal actions occurring within a 500-year floodplain, a public notice and opportunity for comment is being provided, as required by the FAA. The public may submit comments on the proposed projects and their potential effects on the 500-year floodplain for a period of thirty (30) days following the publication of this notice.
All comments received during the review period will be taken into consideration prior to the FAA making an environmental determination.
Please submit comments to Will.Nelson@grandcanyonresort.com regarding the proposed project.
